Fights

Some boxing fans might pick this upcoming Saturday’s so called “dream match” as a mismatch. At first, that’s what I thought too. But as the day for this big fight comes closer, and after seeing Oscar de la Hoya’s recent photos, I’m starting to think that Manny Pacquiao has a chance in winning this fight.

Looking at their most recent fights, Oscar faced a slick boxer in Stevie Forbes. Now, Freddie Roach is saying that Manny can beat Oscar because Stevie is not as strong as Manny, but Manny is not as slick as Stevie. Yes, Stevie was able to bust-up Oscar because he has good boxing skills, whereas Manny is more of an all-out offensive slugger. Big difference.

When UFC three-time heavyweight champion Randy ”The Natural” Couture returns to the Octagon at UFC 91 on Saturday, November 15th in Sin City, he will be facing a bigger, stronger, faster, and younger opponent in Brock Lesnar.

But Couture would have been fitting as the man to have coined the phrase “the bigger they are the harder they fall.” I’m sure Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga would agree based on the ass whooping both endured from the much undersized Couture. (more…)

“This is an obvious pick” you say… All signs point to an easy Silva victory. His vast arsenal of knees, kicks, elbows and punches will make this fight, to quote Ricardo Arona (which I may never do again), “fun on the feet”. The Spider also has a significant advantage in ground skill as well, as he is good at avoiding damage from the bottom and looking for submissions from there.

So why do I think Cote is winning this fight? He has alot going for him. Consider these points:

  • Styles make fights. Cote has solid footwork and ridiculous power in his fists. Also, he has never been rocked, fazed, or stunned. Hell, he’s never even had his dinner interrupted by a telemarketer. Thats how unflappable he is.
  • He lost to Travis “Footsteps” Lutter. If that simple fact doesn’t motivate Cote for the rest of his career, then OJ didn’t do it and our economy is flourishing.
  • He has a cool name. Patrick Cote. Go ahead, say it out loud. Aren’t you glad I’m here?
  • Dude is CONFIDENT. Cote wont want anything to do with Ando on the ground, so he’ll be forced to bang with him. If he uses his footwork to throw punches from odd angles, I think he’ll do fine on his feet. It will also be interesting to see how he does in the clinch, as his highlight reel KO of Kendall Grove happened from there. Then again, Anderson’s knees might have an appointment with Patrick’s face, too. It’ll be fascinating to say the least.
  • There’s just something in the air about this fight. I feel the exact same way I did before Mark Coleman fought Shogun Rua. I think the UFC is getting a little carried away with the Anderson hype. He’s a wonderful fighter, but he certainly isn’t invincible.

The verdict: this will be an absolute beauty of a fight. Cote will dance around for awhile before landing a few big blows and narrowly eeking out a five round decision win to take Anderson’s belt.

Matt Hughes (42-6) is coming off a submission loss to GSP [1] in December. He may be the greatest Welterweight of all-time but the sport’s evolution is producing better fighters every day. At 34-years-old, he may only have a few more years to get back his title. Standing in his way is Thiago Alves (14-3), who is on a 5 fight winning streak that includes stoppages of Chris Lytle [15] and Karo Parisyan [8] in his last two bouts. The 24-year-old kickboxer trains at, arguably the best camp in the world, American Top Team (ATT) in Florida. Since his loss to Spencer Fisher in 2005, he has gone 8-1 with 7 stoppage victories. A win here will put him in line for the GSP/Fitch winner. I can’t bet against Hughes in this one. I see him taking Thiago down and grounding and pounding his way to a TKO.

UFC 84 - Ill Will

The fight game can get very personal and the war of words between UFC Lightweight Champion “THE PRODIGY” BJ PENN and former champ SEAN “THE MUSCLE SHARK” SHERK has taken personal to a whole new level. The talking stops and the real competition begins as these two men step into the Octagon to determine the undisputed king of the 155-lb. division.

Plus, the controversial “HUNTINGTON BEACH BAD BOY” TITO ORTIZ faces undefeated Karate master LYOTO “THE DRAGON” MACHIDA.

UFC 84 - Silva Training Hard for Jardine

Wanderlei Silva says he knows the importance of his UFC 84 fight against Keith Jardine on May 24 after losing his last three bouts.

Silva and Jardine meet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in a much-anticipated light-heavyweight clash.

Both men enter the bout off the back of fights against the legendary Chuck Liddell, although they enjoyed differing fortunes against the “Iceman”.

Silva, the 31-year-old Brazilian, is looking to get his career back on track after dropping a decision to Liddell in their epic, fight-of-the-year clash at UFC 79 in late December.

Meanwhile, Jardine will be fighting for the first time in eight months after his shock split-decision win over Liddell at UFC 76 in September.

While Silva is looking to get back on track after losing his last three fights (one in UFC, two in the final days of PRIDE), Jardine is hoping that a victory will help his continuing claims for a shot at the light-heavyweight title held by Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

Saturday night: undefeated Ricky ”The Hitman” Hatton will discover exactly where he stands in the world of boxing, when he climbs through the ropes at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to battle unbeaten WBC welterweight champion ”Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather and HattonHatton will find himself in the unusual position of being the underdog, with odds at +190. Even with the thousands in attendance and millions watching around the globe, he will be reminded the role of puppy is the loneliest of all. But there’s a big payday awaiting Hatton.

Ricky Hatton, at 29 the younger man by a year, has won all 43 of his professional bouts with 31 knock outs. He’s a down to Earth Brit who quietly goes about his business, unlike the brash American Mayweather who proclaims loudly he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

In his last fight, Hatton took on the highly-regarded Mexican warrior Jose Luis Castillo. A savage shot to the liver, in round four, earned Hatton his biggest victory to date and a shot at Mayweather.

Mayweather has more impressive names on his resume than Hatton does, having come out on top against the likes of Castillo (twice), Genaro Hernandez, Angel Manfredy, Diego Corrales, Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah and Oscar de la Hoya in his latest fight which went the distance.

The champion is blessed with sweeter moves than Sugar Ray Robinson and a motor-mouth to match Muhammad Ali. He’s 38-0-0 with 24 of his wins coming by way of knock out making him the favorite of the two.

Mayweather has won six world boxing championships in five different weight classes, three Golden Gloves titles as an amateur and also claimed featherweight bronze in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

This will be a prime example of a boxer vs. brawler, in the same vain as Ali/Fraiser and Robinson/LaMotta. Mayweather and Hatton are as good at their respective styles as is anything in the sport today, and their difference in personalities will make for a great fight of its own.

The 5′6” Hatton will come at Mayweather for three minutes of every round, but faces a big disadvantage in height. He’s two inches shorter and has a much shorter reach at 65”, which will allow the 5′8” Mayweather to use his jab effectively from a distance. But if the Manchester, England fighter gets his tactics right, the Hitman can take Pretty Boy Floyd out.

Both men bring unblemished records to the ring, but one will leave with his first loss barring a draw. Will it be the boxing style of the quiet Brit as the underdog? Or brawling nature of the inner city Mayweather as favorite?

It’s a night of stellar boxing action and you don’t want to miss it. Stay tuned to SportsCityLine for up to the minute updates.

Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, successfully defended his belt Saturday at UFC 74. However, as his assistant revealed today, Couture suffered a broken bone in his left arm during the fight.

Randy CoutureCouture, 44, who defeated contender Gabriel Gonzaga by TKO in the third round, broke an ulna bone in his left forearm during the third round, said his assistant Valerie Haney.

“It happened on [Gonzaga's] high leg kick at Randy’s head,” Haney said. “Randy blocked the kick with his left arm.”

Couture, a five-time UFC champion in two weight classes, will have a splint on the arm for six weeks, a period that will extend into his plans to appear in a film being shot in South Africa.

The broken bone was discovered Sunday, Haney said. Couture was visiting a chiropractor in Las Vegas when he reported the arm was “sore, tender, swollen,” Haney said. An X-ray confirmed the break.
