I love Breeders Cup Day, because you get to see the finest horses in the world, ridden by the best jocks, and prepared by the best trainers

However, that makes handicapping a nightmare. It’s a day to watch the best and make your bets count. No betting favorites - there are too many great horses and jocks out there at a price to dabble with the chalk.Breeders Cup Trophy

Here are some of the things I look for on a tough day like Saturday: I like fresh horses. I like it when a horse shows only a race or two in the last few months. In other words look for a FRESH horse that is being primed for his best effort today, not one who has been on a long trail to get here. This is especially true with the 2-year-olds.

I also look for horses getting bet under their morning line and are, say, 10-1 or more. Example: a 20-1 horses on the morning line is at 9-1 on the board as post time approaches. That’s live money on a day like Saturday and I’ll take a shot at that price. Here are some horses I’m looking at real close as post time approaches: Classic - Lawyer Ron, I’m liking the new jock and new trainer

Juvenile Fillies - Her Majesty, fits the above-mentioned “FRESH”. Sprint - Friendly Island, at 30-1 with Dominguez up for the first time! That last race he had on the turf was to get his legs firmed up. I like a WPS bet here at a big price.

Some others I like and am considering are: Juvenile - CP West; will be closing. Distaff - Asi Siempre; ready to run a big race. Rail may be a problem? That’s some of what I’m looking at. I hope it helps you.

FURLONGS:

This is the 6th time the Cup will be held at Churchill. Next year it’s Monmouth Park in New Jersey, just an hour north of Atlantic City.

The only horse to win the Classic twice and he did it back-to-back, was…Tiznow.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has 17 horses running today. That makes the Yankee’s payroll look like “chump change”. I can’t decide if I would rather saddle a horse on Breeders Cup Day (saddle means I own him) or pitch an inning in a World Series game.

Probably saddle the horse.
